For his entire adult life, Dan has been teaching in one form or another. He has traveled the world educating teachers on how to deliver explicit, hands-on, direct instructional materials to their students. For more than seven years, he has been teaching rope bondage to students in Southern California. In 2015, All Tied Up San Diego began delivering their version of Japanese shibari and western-style rope bondage to the San Diego rope community.
During the COVID-19 Pandemic, transferred the Introductory, 101, and 201 in-person classes, into online experience courses. This was a huge labor of love and something that will benefit students for years to come.
As his name implies, he likes rope and openly admits to being a fascinated student of rope and is constantly learning and growing his skills. Doing rope bondage is an intimate, connected experience that takes time and attention to detail—providing his students with a unique perspective on bringing people closer together. No two ties are ever the same. No two experiences are ever alike. His love for rope comes through in every class he teaches.

Renee is a complex, quiet, introverted, shy, intellectual, over-thinker, who is very protective, caring and perceptive. It is safe to say that there isn’t a lot she misses in any given situation. She is also a rope bunny and the co-owner of All Tied Up San Diego. She identifies solely as a bottom (person tied up) and enjoys being tied and sharing her experiences in rope. As a bottom she delivers the lecture portion of the Introductory Classes, showing the importance of bottom education. It isn’t all about tying someone up - a bottom has much to learn about themselves, communication, physiology, and most importantly what they want out of rope bondage.
Together she and Dan have hosted over 575 different rope events and have taught more than 220 Introductory Shibari Rope Classes to more than 3,500 unique individuals just like you. Their passion and joy for rope comes through every time they teach.
In 2023, they release their first podcast entitled, Vanilla with a Side of Kink. This is their story of how they found kink, found each other, and eventually became a couple. This is a story that will help you learn what you don't even know you want to learn. You can find the podcast on anywhere you find podcasts (Apple, Google, Spotify, Etc.)
Great class that teaches you the basics but it was also so much more
I took the intro class at ATU because I was interested to learn about rope and I have to say the class was super fun and the events that the organization host are even funner. During the class I learned about negotiation, safety and some basic rope skills. For someone who knew nothing about Shibari this was perfect. Dan and Renee where welcoming and non-pretentious about their craft. Now that I have attended that class, I enjoy going to their community events. This community has become the only way I meet other people who I choose to tie with since I know if they have been to the classes they are learned how to do rope safely and consensually.
Great class thoughtful instructor
At first I was a little worried about taking a rope class online. After the second class I realized this format actually works better with my life. Being able to go through the modules on my own learn and practice on my time, was a new way of learning for me. Pleasant surprise that it worked. Dan has done A great job thoughtfully curating the most important content and presenting it in fun inspiring ways. Also a plus for me is the ability to go back over and over again and refresh my skills. I highly recommend this class and I think it’s a tremendous value for the little that he charges.
ATU - an incredible kink COMMUNITY
It’s been a LONG pandemic year and I’m so very thankful to have had this amazing community to connect with throughout it all. Between virtual Munch events, group Slack conversations and virtual classes, ATU has kept us tied together (see what I did there?). And last night -OMG FINALLY – our first in-person Munch in what felt like forever! What a fabulous night! Thank you, Sir Knotty Dan and Renee for organizing our first in-person event after such a long hiatus. It was SO FREAKING EPIC to hug friends again, catch up with people in a way that is just so challenging to do online and meet new folx as well! You helped us feel safe and supported. I’m so thankful for this amazing community that you’ve created and I’m still in afterglow from the evening.
