Thank you for teaching us how to synchonize expectations with potential play partners. I am shy—in other words, risk adverse. Dan’s class helped me realize that shyness = instinctive risk awareness. Introvertness means I’m picky about who I play with, and THAT’S OKAY.

In the past, I tried to push though social anxiety because I wanted to stay open-hearted, but it backfired. I kept finding myself panicking and unable to identify why. Now I understand I was panicking because I wasn’t vetting my partners. I thought being open-hearted meant I had to give everyone a chance. Vetting is an invaluable tool for discovering your needs, taking pride in them, trusting that you’ll have plenty of opportunities to play, and making sure you invest your energy where it will be appreciated. Obviously, that’s super useful not just for BDSM, but for life generally.
